Centre of Sustainable Excellence
Sustainability is a primary objective for Ripley Town Centre, and as such the centre has incorporated a number of sustainability initiatives and outcomes and is targeting a 5 Star Green Star Design and As-Built v1.1 rating.
Initiatives
- Naturally ventilated mall
- Improved outside air rates to tenancies
- 480kW of Solar PV located on the roof and an innovative car park shade structure
- Advanced lighting controls and energy efficient LED lights
- Rainwater reuse to reduced mains water demand
- Water Sensitive Urban Design Principles including the use of bio-swales for Stormwater management
- Recycling bins installed for customers and tenants
- Individual tenancies have incorporated appropriate materials including Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for flooring, paints, adhesives and sealants and energy efficient HVAC systems, fans and lighting
Outcomes
- 81% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions compared to a Standard Practice Building
- 66% reduction in grid electricity consumption via Large Scale Solar
- 63% reduction Electricity Peak Demand compared to a Standard Practice Building
- 74% reduction in Potable Water Consumption compared to a Standard Practice Building
- 94.6% reduction in Construction waste going to landfill
A Green Star rating has been selected because research has shown:
- On average, Green Star certified buildings produce 62% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than average Australian buildings and 45% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than if they had been built to meet minimum industry requirements
- On average, Green Star certified buildings use 66% less electricity than average Australian buildings and 50% less electricity than if they had been built to meet minimum industry requirements
- On average, Green Star buildings use 51% less potable water than average buildings
- On average, Green Star As-Built certified buildings recycled 96% of their construction and demolition waste
- Since Green Star’s introduction to the market in 2003, more than 6 million square metres of building area have been Green Star certified
